Jon & Kate Separ8

When Jon & Kate Plus 8 first aired, I loved it. No, I was obsessed with it. Half Asian babies are So cute!!! ahem…
As a family unit, they seemed to work really well, and it was clear that they both really loved their children. The children… They’re so charming, and precious… And all of them are so beautiful. But then after watching for a while, something was different. Instead of finding Kate witty and her comments funny, I started to think that she was demeaning and belittled Jon with her snide remarks. Subsequently, I didn’t watch the show for quite a while (also, I didn’t have a TV, which didn’t help…).
Then came all the drama. Jon was cheating, Kate was putting her kids in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, they were bad parents, etc, etc.. They’ve been in the glossy mags without fail every week – Jon did this, Kate said that.. It was a bit too much – all the time! But was it all true?
When I realised yesterday’s episode would be the last of the series, I decided to watch it – thinking it would be interesting. Oh my, I got so angry! I didn’t realise Jon was so much of an awful person. So now he’s dating this Hailey girl, which is basically him having an early mid-life crisis. He said something about it being because he married and had babies too young and now that he’s not with Kate, he’s going back to life as a 23 year old. Dude, you’re 32 now.. with 8 kids! Step it up! Not being with your wife anymore doesn’t mean all the responsibility you had has gone. You’re a PARENT, not a 23 year old bachelor! And when he started talking about how he has work and family separate with his apartment in New York and his family in the country – “the best of both worlds”, I wanted to jump into the TV and smack him. What a prick! He kind of seemed proud of himself… yuck. It was as if he was entitled to act like a frat boy. But the thing that gets me is that these people aren’t normal people. They’re followed by the paparazzo every day, and everything they do is made public and in some cases blown completely out of proportion. His kids are going to see this when they’re older and I wonder if Jon has thought about that..
Then with the lemonade thing. oh my god. He was so mean to his girls. The twins, Cara and Mady, were making a poster for the lemonade sale they were doing, and they were having a mini hissy fit about the coloured pens, “she has my pen”, “I want that pen”, “the yellow pen has run out”, “mommy has lots of yellow pens” – OUCH! And then one of them said “I like stuff we do with mom”. Jon got SO mad at her and immediately took her pens and poster and told her to go inside and said he’d put her poster in the trash, and she wasn’t allowed to go to the lemonade sale. Then the other twin was being a bit grumpy and she wasn’t allowed to go either. He was definitely being too harsh – he said they were rude. They must be going through so much, and at only 9 years old, he should be more caring to them, and listen and try to find out why they find “mommy time” more enjoyable. The twins are going to be teenagers soon, and will probably act out more!
Kate on the other hand.. I really like her. She’s a really good mummy to her kids. I’m sure having kids is a challenge.. and having 8 kids and now facing everything alone must be mentally and physically EXHAUSTING! Poor Kate.. I actually feel really bad for her. And she said her kids miss the crew. I know some people are like “yuck, she’s such a bad parent for putting her babies on TV at such a young age and they’re going to be all screwed up”. I know that with how the media is today that it will be difficult for her to give her kids a 100% normal life.. They’ll probably be on TMZ in 30 years time with the caption “What They’re Doing Now” or something stupid. But I hope that she can raise them out of the spotlight. She said that they don’t know about “girlfriends” and that that’s the last thing she wants them knowing about. Kudos Kate!
She took the sextuplets to their neighbours farm to milk the cows. They all walked, and by the way she spoke to the kids, you could tell that she is a really tough cookie and is going to raise them to be very strong. One of the boys was crying a bit from all the walking, and she told him to man up and stop crying. I think if the kids were with her all the time, it would really be beneficial. And she kind of spoke to them really matter-of-fact-ly.
When they were walking in the road “don’t worry the paparazzi will keep everyone else away from us”. Being that she has such a tough outer shell, it seemed that she was being very genuine when she said that she was said that her marriage had finished. She said that she has to be the hard-working parent model to her kids, and doesn’t want them to remember her tearing Jon apart, as it’s not constructive or helpful. How true is that!! She acknowledges that it’s so important for her kids to spend time with their father and that they need that time. Maybe it got edited out, but Jon didn’t mention anything like that. It was clear that she really misses the partnership that they had, and wishes that it turned out differently. And she doesn’t look at her babies and see dollar signs, she sees the opportunities that they had to go to different places, and she’s grateful for all the memories that they now have on tape.
I hope Kate gets full custody of her beautiful kids and that they grow up to be happy and successful in whatever it is they do. And I love Hannah for not putting on the fireman hat because it would mess up her hair!
