Princess & The Frog, Tiger Woods... How important is “race” in the portrayal of things?

Mac Cartoons: Tiger Woods crashes his car after an argument with his wife."No, no, no! Honey. You're lifting your head and not following through!"

Disney has been jumping all over the whole “including all different races” thing in their movies. They had to make a big song and dance about their new movie The Princess & The Frog with the “Black Princess”, but when you make a big deal out of something, you open yourself up to some MAJOR criticism. Disney, unfortunately, can never get it right. There’s too much racism; too many sexual connotations. But kids don’t pick up on that – they don’t watch the Lion King and see boobs in the sky or whatever the controversial scene was! Only overbearing parents with nothing to do between PTA meetings make these stupid claims.

Apparently in the Princess & The Frog, the princess’ hair is too “white” because she doesn’t have “black person” hair, and the characters’ voices are racist. Isn’t this like a curly red headed person saying that Ariel from The Little Mermaid didn’t have big curly red hair, but straight hair.. Therefore Disney is saying that only red headed people with straight hair are beautiful. Therefore all red headed people with big curly hair should go out and buy straighteners immediately. And with Mulan, are they saying that most Asian girls could (with merely a costume change) be passed off as a boy?! OH MY GOD, Disney is blatantly telling Asian girls that they look like boys! I mean, come on!

People are crazy. I’ve read on multiple sites that people are taking the Tiger Woods cheating thing to be a racial matter – because… wait for it… he’s a black man!!! Give me a break! Isn’t Tiger Woods part Dutch, Chinese, Native American, Thai and about 4 other things?! So what, does that automatically make Chinese people womanizing man-whores?! Of course it doesn’t – I forgot, his skin is darker than a Chinese persons’ and Chinese people are supposed to be accountants or play violins – not be golfers. Race and over generalised assumptions do not make the person.. And whether we like it or not, people cheat – regardless of their ancestry.

It really bothers me when people make stuff out of nothing though. Our race does not define us. And what is race but a person’s skin colour… Think of all the Asian people who don’t live in South East Asia, but in North America. Many of them don’t speak their mother tongue, don’t eat crazy Asian food, or play an Asian instrument. They speak the hip slang, eat McDonalds, play guitars and hockey and date non-Asian people. Does it make their parents sad? Probably.. But that’s life. We live in this multicultural world and have to see the best of it. Chinese people in China have probably never heard of Perogies, Poutine or Latkes: Polish, Quebecois and Jewish cuisine (!) – all from the humble potato. I believe that we have to remember where our ancestors came from, but also that we must learn from all the diversity around us!

Are you a crazy fan girl?

The phenomenon is huge. They’re marketing candy, shower curtains, lip gloss. Farm owners in Utah are combineharvesting their faces into their fields. See more pictures here.

Yes, I’m talking about TWILIGHT. You KNOW some crazy fan girl is super mad that the Team Jacob field is bigger than the Team Edward one… AS IF!

Anyway, I have not read any of the books or seen any of the movies. I think it’s because there is WAY too much hype surrounding them! I mean, what’s with the crazy fan girls that are going around biting people and attacking people?! That’s not ok at all! I just don’t get it. And there’s one crazy fan girl who posts videos on youtube where she gets really worked up and starts hurling abuse at people who hurl abuse at her for being in love with these Twilight movies/books/etc. Her videos have had a total of over 500,000 views. Which is pretty crazy! I’ve seen a few of the “extreme-fan” videos and they’re actually quite scary. Makes you wonder if some of them are a little unstable in the brain area..

And the actors.. The main guy Robert Pattinson has done some interviews where he talks about his personal hygiene being disgusting.. YUCK! Why would you even want to talk about that?! And these crazy girls are still fawning over him. The guy is an actor.. Not a vampire.. He’s just a guy that apparently doesn’t shower on a regular basis… Great guy to have a teen crush on…

And the girl.. Kristen Stewart. She’s a very pretty girl, but she looks so bloody miserable all the time. I’m sure it must be pretty weird becoming super famous in such a short space of time, but she just doesn’t look very happy about it. Maybe she’s just staying in character for all her interviews…?!

But the whole Twilight is kind of cultish, one reporter wrote that the success of this series of books has “filled the hole left by Harry Potter”, while another wrote “Move over Harry Potter”. But I think the “Crazy Fan Syndrome” been taken a step or 5 further with Twilight when compared with Harry Potter. People pretend they are the characters and write their own stories and post them online. If we think for a second about the Harry Potter books, they did definitely have a huge following, but because of the sexual undertones that is apparent in ANYTHING written about vampires (even Stoker’s Dracula), it takes the coming of age story and sucks the innocence out of it – literally! But saying that, Anne Rice’s vampire books had a pretty big following too, but it was more of a goth following – as opposed to millions of teenage girls.

Well, on the flip side, I guess it’s good that these kids are actually reading books..

But what makes me uncomfortable is the Twilight-moms that go to the movies and there’s videos of them sitting there FREAKING out when the guy comes on the screen. It’s embaressing to watch.. And I’m not knocking crushes on teenage boys haha.. I think Zac Efron is beautiful.. (I dont care if he looks a bit like a girl!!!) but that doesn’t mean I’m going to memorise the words to High School Musical and scream like a crazy person every time I see a picture of him or something. I haven’t even seen the High School Musical movies….. hmm.. weekend project!

Well, the second Twilight movie screens at midnight, so I hope all of you Twilight fans enjoy the movie. Maybe when these books become not so in the spot light, I’ll read them!

The phenomenon is huge. They’re marketing candy, shower curtains, lip gloss.
